Synapse/Riot for family, Rocket.Chat for business. This is what I do here both for Matrix and Rocket.

I recommend that you use the Docker-compose install and reverse proxy it using Apache or Nginx and let thos handle the SSL stuff. Your SSL cert has nothing to do with Rocket. Also Riot's direct calls are easier to engage. Rocket's mobile app relies on push notifications. I use Synapse/Riot mainly because the Fdroid (non Gplay ) builds can sync in the background.

Also Rocket.Chat has a full blown administration panel, Synapse(matrix) has no admin panel it is all command line really.īasically Rocket has more features. Rocket still uses Jitsi for that as the backend. One thing Riot has over Rocket is the direct p2p calls between 2 users. You will need Jitsi for conference calls whether you are using Rocket or Riot. What are you experience with the two and what would your recommend for a Discord alternative with E2EE and a reliable voice call function? But the two main features (E2EE and voice calls) seem to be better in Riot/Matrix. So when we use Riot/Matrix, how difficult is it to get the direct calls to work? Do we have to install something like we had for Rocket Chat with Jitsi too?Ĥ) For our needs we feel Rocket Chat is really solid, it feels a bit more intuitive than Riot/Matrix. I saw in Riot/Matrix there is the option to do direct calls from one person to another, and these should also be encrypted. This works okay but we would prefer if there is a way to make voice calls without an extra Jitis instance or app. We also installed a Jitsi instance for our current Rocket Chat server and linked them together. We don`t have real senstivie data we share, we just want to be private and would prefer a good E2EE encryption for text (and if possible calls).ģ) Besides chatting and sending files, we mainly need voice calls.

Is this because of the missing SSL connection or can this have a differnent reason?Ģ) How good/safe is the E2EE of Rocket Chat compared to Riot/Matrix? The Riot/Matrix E2EE looks a lot more advanced.

I have a few questions I would really appreciate your help with:ġ) Our biggest problem is that we were not able to get the SSL certificate (with Lets Encrypt) to work properly.īecause we don`t have a proper SSL connection, I think we are also not able to activate the E2E encryption, we always get the error "Undefined" when E2EE is enable in a chat. We have already setup a Rocket Chat server and it is running quite smooth. We are currently looking to switch from Discord to either Rocket Chat or Riot/Matrix.
